Bar hostess Tokyo Japan

Oil and charcoal on linen canvas, 24 x 18″, February 28 – March 1 2017. This is my ‘modern (urban as opposed to rural) life’ (21st century) update on Manet’s “Un bar aux Folies Bergere” which was a place in Paris, a once important ‘centre’ of the so-called ‘art world’, where, amongst others, prostitutes and their clients (including artists) gathered. There is much more I could say, in relation to the phenomenal rise of Japan, a small group of islands, after the Second World War… but I’m going to leave it at that. As to whether the work is finished or not, I am as yet undecided.
