Japanese Beauty

Oil on cotton canvas, 36 x 36″, March 2-3 2017

I must just say that this painting does not do the beautiful model justice. It could be worked on a great deal more but I have had enough of it. This is extremely hard work, this trying to capture a good likeness as well as create a fine piece of painting. As a consequence I have learned stuff. Significantly, that a photographic image and a painted one are two completely different things: the one cannot be a substitute for the other. They are as different as the spoken and the written word. This is the first time I have attempted to make a relatively large painted copy of a photographic image of a face and it has been a good experience and one I’d recommend to others. I will certainly be doing it again.
