Yes, there was (still is) an ongoing problematic in the history of western art between colour and form (drawing)… The great draughtsmen, (think of Ingres, for instance,) placed great stress on the drawing aspect of an image or painting. Then there are those who used colour and regarded drawing as secondary… I don’t think the difficulty has ever or will ever be overcome… I suppose Cezanne and after him the Cubists and modern painters generally “drew” with colour in an effort to overcome the difficulties… but there has been no successful union or marriage between the two… ie., colour and form, so far as I’m aware!
