Study after a late 18th / early 19th century drawing / etching of a sylvan view of oak and ash trees

oaks and ashes

oil on 12 ounce cotton canvas, 32 x 24″, Feb 1 2018

Interesting to note that the oaks were being attacked by ivy even back in the late 18th century… or that’s what it looks like from the etching (a poor quality b & w print…) the view has, to my mind, a Disneyesque feel to it… of course Walt Disney wasn’t born until much later… but I can almost imagine the seven dwarfs appearing from behind that large rock… cue music… or Bambi eating grass… Surely the woods and forests back in the late 18th century weren’t so tidy, were they?
