My painting “Looking south from a decimated spruce forest on Slieve Anierin” speaks in metaphors of the ultimate futility and vanity of human endeavour; it speaks of the rise and fall of civilisations and empires; it speaks of a nihilistic lack of faith in anything. The trees have been reaped and their trunks now lie like the fallen columns of some ancient Greek temple ruin. The view from this decimated spruce forest is a spectacular one. No doubt about it. But I have chosen to show it from another angle as a wilderness and a waste land beyond which there is nothing but a vast emptiness.
