Amongst other things I have been reading Technological Slavery, the collected writings of Ted Kaczynski, the so-called ‘unabomber’, and am appalled that a man with a ‘genius’ IQ of 170 can reason so defectively.
There is clearly something missing from this guy’s mental apparatus.
He says that in order to get his (worthless) opinions heard he has had to kill his fellow human beings! Better surely by far that his opinions got ‘swamped’ out of existence? I mean, is his opinion that important? To himself, yes, but to the world?
The fact that history or current events ghoulishly and even with relish emphasise this or that piece of trivia is, in the scheme of things, neither here nor there. Don’t believe the media hype.
But to get back, this attitude of his, this coldness of heart, seems to be a factor common to all extremists. They want to be heard and they will do anything in order to be heard. They are of course, and without a doubt, raving madmen! And they are everywhere screaming at the top of their voices, crying to be heard.
“Listen to me!” “I’m telling you the truth!” “This is the meaning of life!”
They come in many shapes and sizes, too, some slickly packaged, some a tangled mess, but not all of them are as cold and unfeeling as the killers and would-be mass murderers that get their names recorded in the ultimately meaningless annals of history.
Spoilt brats that grow up into monsters.
So, if, for instance, by Kaczynski’s reasoning, an artist doesn’t want to see his work swamped and lost in the deluge of imagery we are bombarded with in today’s world, maybe he should kill a few people, do some serial killings (rather than serial paintings perhaps), or commit suicide on a grand scale.
There seems to be a pattern in all this. Look at all the terrorism in our world, all the groups, all the individuals, all the power-mad politicos, all the oppressive governments, they’re all at it. It’s just a matter of degree as to where the real extremists reside.
Is it then more important to satisfy the vain desires of men than live in peace? I think not.
Here is what Kaczynski writes:
- As for our constitutional rights, consider for example that of freedom of the press. We certainly don’t mean to knock that right; it is a very important tool for limiting concentration of political power and for keeping those who do have political power in line by publicly exposing any misbehavior on their part. But freedom of the press is of very little use to the average citizen as an individual. The mass media are mostly under the control of large organizations that are integrated into the system. Anyone who has a little money can have something printed, or can distribute it on the Internet or in some such way, but what he has to say will be swamped by the vast volume of material put out by the media, hence it will have no practical effect. To make an impression on society with words is therefore almost impossible for most individuals and small groups. Take us (FC) for example. If we had never done anything violent and had submitted the present writings to a publisher, they probably would not have been accepted. If they had been accepted and published, they probably would not have attracted many readers, because it’s more fun to watch the entertainment put out by the media than to read a sober essay. Even if these writings had had many readers, most of these readers would soon have forgotten what they had read as their minds were flooded by the mass of material to which the media expose them. In order to get our message before the public with some chance of making a lasting impression, we’ve had to kill people.
When he says “we’ve had to kill people” he means “he’s killed (and has no compunctions to keep right on killing just to get his vain opinions heard)”. This man and all the others of a similar bent need treatment. At least society got one thing right. He is not on Death Row like so many others, no, he is currently locked away in ADX Florence, Colorado, for the rest of his days.
We need protection from such people. But we need to study this matter in depth and do something to prevent the continuation of such madness. We need to completely re-educate ourselves. Because the way things are at present is just unacceptable.
